Part1

Appearance of the work shop

Every custom-shoe is made in the work shop in Paris by skillful artisan. It is a bit small
factory than I expected. However, it is a tasteful place indeed.

The last comes first.

Piled wooden blocks are used as lasts and shoe-trees. A worker is making shoe-trees by hand.

Making shoe trees

A worker is grinding a shoe tree. The shoe tree is the same shape as the customer's last.

The basis of the customer's last

There are many types of basic lasts on the rack. A last maker chooses
one last which matches with the customer's foot.

How to cut the last.

After choosing one pair of basic last, the last maker cuts the last to make it fit to the customer's foot.

Tools for making last

Mr.Patrice showed me some files, a special pipe covered with sandpaper and a measure.
Customer's foot pattern is recorded on a sheet in the picture.

Completed last

A piece of leather is stuck on the part of instep or outside quarter of the last.
